Authorities at the Lao Bao International Border Gate Border Guard Station in Quang Tri Province said on the evening of May 14 that they had received 56 Vietnamese citizens handed over by Lao authorities for alleged involvement in “organizing online gambling and money laundering activities.”

According to initial information, at around 3:30 p.m. on May 13, the Lao Bao International Border Gate Border Guard Station received the 56 citizens from the Lao Ministry of Public Security following an official request from the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos regarding the coordinated transfer of Vietnamese nationals accused of violating Lao law through the Lao Bao International Border Gate.

After receiving the group, authorities carried out health checks, collected initial statements and reviewed immigration records.

All 56 individuals were reported to be in normal health.

Checks on the immigration system showed that 36 individuals had records of lawful departure from Vietnam, while 20 others had no immigration data.

The 20 people suspected of violating immigration regulations were transferred to Quang Tri provincial police for further investigation and handling in accordance with the law.

According to authorities, the group was linked to activities involving “organizing online gambling and money laundering on cyberspace.”

Earlier, at around 4:45 p.m. on May 12 in Ka Tang Village, Lao Bao Commune, forces from the Lao Bao International Border Gate Border Guard Station coordinated with the Anti-Drug and Crime Task Force under the Quang Tri Border Guard Command to catch two suspects in the act of organizing an illegal border crossing into Laos.

The suspects were identified as Ho Van Dieu, born in 2009, and Ho Van Vuong, born in 2007, both residing in Khe Sanh Commune, Quang Tri Province.

Authorities said the pair was attempting to take Le Manh Dung, born in 1994 and residing in Hai Phong City, across the border illegally in exchange for a payment of VND1 million ($39).

Investigators have formally detained Ho Van Dieu and Ho Van Vuong on charges of “organizing illegal exit for others,” while seizing multiple pieces of evidence and related documents for further investigation.

Le Manh Dung is also being investigated for handling under Vietnamese law.
