The latest case is a 25- year-old man from Xuan Truong commune of Xuan Loc district in the southern province of Dong Nai.
He fell ill and was admitted to a local hospital for a checkup on September 22. The following days he tested positive for monkeypox and has since been isolated for treatment and genetic sequencing.
The Ho Chi Minh City Center of Disease Control (HCDC) tracked eight other people who came into direct contact with the patient to minimise the risk of spreading the disease further.
A friend from the southern province of Binh Duong, who has been staying with the patient in a hired apartment in Ho Chi Minh City, also tested positive for monkeypox.
In 2022 the Ministry of Health decided to add monkeypox to Group B infectious diseases which are classified as dangerous, highly contagious, and potentially fatal diseases.
