After a series of disappointing results against regional rivals Vietnam, the Thailand head coach has little room left for error.

Hudson is entering one of the most pressured squad-selection periods since taking charge of Thailand 11 months ago.

Instead of announcing his squad this week as initially planned, the English coach has pushed back the unveiling of his 23 players for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 in Indonesia until the afternoon of Sept. 14.

Thailand, known as the War Elephants, have been drawn in the same group as Pakistan, the Philippines and, most significantly, Vietnam.

In theory, Hudson is in a more favorable position than during Thailand’s previous two training camps.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup takes place during the FIFA international match window, meaning clubs are required to release players called up by their national teams.

Hudson will therefore not have to contend with a depleted squad because clubs are holding on to players, as happened during the ASEAN Cup.

Having players available, however, is not the same as selecting the right ones.

That is why Hudson is continuing to monitor Thai League matches over the weekend before finalizing his squad on Monday.

The weekend fixtures, beginning Sept. 11, have effectively become a final audition, with players’ form, fitness and tactical suitability all potentially influencing Hudson’s decisions.

The 45-year-old coach has additional reason to be cautious, given the mounting pressure to deliver results.

Thailand’s previous two international periods failed to meet expectations, from the FIFA window in June to the ASEAN Cup 2026, where the War Elephants lost the regional title to Vietnam. Vietnam retained the championship with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Thailand in the final.

Another unfavorable result against Southeast Asia’s leading rival could intensify debate over Hudson’s future and potentially put his position as Thailand head coach at risk.

That makes choosing the 23-man squad a major headache for Hudson.

He needs his best individual players, but he must also assemble a balanced group with sufficient fitness and the right characteristics for the style of football he is trying to implement.

Thailand begin their FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign against Pakistan on Sept. 26 before facing Vietnam at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 in Bandung. Their final group opponent will be the Philippines on Oct. 2.

With only the group winner advancing to the final, the Thailand-Vietnam encounter could effectively decide who progresses.

For Hudson, the battle with Vietnam begins before either team steps onto the pitch - with the 23 names he chooses for Thailand.
