On December 16, in Can Tho City, the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), and the Vietnam Journalists Association jointly organized the National Press Conference to review 2024 and outline tasks for 2025.

The event was chaired by senior leaders, including Politburo Member Nguyen Trong Nghia; Central Party Committee Member and Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung; Central Party Committee Member, Deputy Head of the Propaganda Department, and Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh; and Deputy Head of the Propaganda Department Phan Xuan Thuy.

Resolute action against press agencies with severe violations

Speaking at the event, Nghia commended the press for its contributions in 2024, highlighting the significant role of leadership, policy orientation, and management, along with the dedication of editors, reporters, and media professionals nationwide.

He underscored the importance of 2025 as the centennial anniversary of Vietnam's revolutionary press, urging media agencies to fulfill their mission of building a professional, humane, and modern journalism landscape.

Nghia emphasized the need for the press to disseminate key Party directives, State policies, and the guiding thoughts of General Secretary To Lam on the nation's new era of development. The press should focus on major political tasks, anniversaries, and events that promote Vietnam's achievements and enhance its international reputation.

He stressed the necessity of impactful, well-focused, and widely influential content to inspire trust, momentum, and enthusiasm across society. Additionally, the press should present a dynamic image of Vietnam while addressing critical issues such as economic development, digital transformation, and global integration.

The Head of the Propaganda Department also directed relevant authorities to review the implementation of the national plan for press development by 2025, amend the 2016 Press Law, and resolve legal and institutional barriers.

Enhancing quality and streamlining press agencies

Nghia emphasized the importance of withdrawing licenses from press outlets found guilty of serious and prolonged violations. He called for a reorganization of journalistic associations and recommended the closure of redundant press units to streamline the system.

He reiterated the necessity of reducing the number of press agencies not merely as a bureaucratic measure but to enhance the quality and effectiveness of journalism. The goal is to empower media agencies and instill greater confidence, passion, and dedication among journalists as they navigate the centennial milestone of Vietnam’s revolutionary press.

Nghia assured that the Party and State would implement policies to protect the rights of those affected by the restructuring, with sufficient investment to ensure the sustainable development of reorganized press entities.
