In April, at the Oslo Esports Cup, Liem defeated Jan-Krzysztof Duda 4-2. However, he came second at the tournament as he was one point behind Duda. At that tournament, Liem shocked the world as he defeated both "chess king" Magnus Carlsen and World Cup champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

After the victory, which helped him bag a reward of US$7,500, the grandmaster will face “chess king” Magnus Carlsen in the fourth round of the tournament.

FTX Crypto Cup 2022 is taking place from August 15-28 in Miami. Currently, Liem is ranked sixth with three points. Meanwhile, Carlsen is leading with nine points.

FTX Crypto Cup is one of the three main prizes in the 9-tournament system of the Champions Chess Tour 2022. FTX Crypto Cup brings together eight world super grandmasters, including the "chess king" Magnus Carlsen.

Players compete in a round robin. Each match, two players play four rapid chess games and there will be a series of tie-breaks if they draw 2-2. FTX Crypto Cup has a total bonus value of up to US$210,000. For each point, the player is awarded $2,500.
