Phan Trung Kien, the founder of Sadu ca gai leo  poultry egg brand

Phan Trung Kien, the founder of Sadu ca gai leo (Solanum procumbens) poultry egg brand, visited the Shark Tank TV Show to call for investment in his startup.

Kien, who was a student at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture, said he wants to create a clean food brand which can contribute to improving the health and stature of Vietnamese.

When working with specialists from Japan, he realized that in Japan there is a kind of egg from fowl fed with herbs and no antibiotics.

“However, in Japan, medicinal herbs are not as abundant and diverse as Vietnam, so the egg is very expensive in the country, which is affordable only to high income earners,” he said.

He began raising chicken with the feed processed by himself from herbs in June 2020. He does not use industrial feed for the chicken.

The chickens on the farms of the startup are raised in a cool environment where they can listen to music and nap.

“With such a method, we have created eggs with good characteristics: they are not fishy and no antibiotics are used,” Kien said.

The founder said that he has brought eggs for examination and found that the cholesterol content in Sadu ca gai leo eggs is very low, just 125.5mg/100 gram of egg.

Meanwhile, the lowest level of cholesterol in eggs that he can find on the internet is 152.3mg/100gram. Kien believes that his Sadu eggs have the lowest cholesterol content in the world.

He said each egg sells at VND8,291 and a box of 12 eggs is priced at VND99,500.

Kien cited research works by the National Institute of Medicinal Materials as saying that ca gai leo can help detoxify liver.

There are many research works about the herb, including one by Bich Thu, deputy head of the institute, conducted in the 1980s.

Based on that research, in 2015, Kien began growing ca gai leo to make ca gai leo tea. As the herb is very beneficial for humans, he decided to use it for livestock as well.

Kien now has a farm in Chuong My district in Hanoi which raises 20,000 chickens.
