Shortly after parting ways with coach Philippe Troussier, the Vietnam team introduced Kim Sang Sik as his successor for the remaining two matches in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. Comparing the first two matches under both coaches, the results are similar: one win and one loss.

However, the most notable difference under Kim Sang Sik's leadership is the heightened spirit and fighting resolve among the players. This renewed vigor was instrumental in Vietnam's victory over the Philippines in a challenging match at My Dinh Stadium and in securing a goal against Iraq.

From a tactical standpoint, the Vietnam team has not yet shown significant innovation in terms of personnel usage or playing style under Kim Sang Sik.

The defense remains fragile, despite featuring the best available players. Offensively, while the overall operation has not dramatically changed, the team's scoring efficiency has improved, with an average of two goals per match.

This improvement is attributed more to the players' unwavering spirit rather than major tactical changes.

Given the limited time Kim has had with the team, it is understandable that his impact on the team's tactics has been minimal. More time is needed to properly assess whether his methods and strategies are a good fit for Vietnamese football.

The initial matches under Kim's leadership have given fans reason to hope. Despite the similar results to those under Troussier, Vietnamese players have begun to regain their confidence and enthusiasm. This renewed energy is crucial as the team moves forward.

Fans are eagerly watching to see if coach Kim Sang Sik can achieve the same level of success as his predecessor Park Hang Seo. While it remains to be seen whether his expertise aligns with Vietnamese football, the early signs are encouraging. The support of fans, players, teams, and the media will be essential for Kim Sang Sik to succeed.

However, the new coach must continue to build on these positive signs and make more substantial contributions to the team's performance. Fortunately, he has time to help the Vietnam team get back on the winning track, though this will not be an easy task given the current state of Vietnamese football.
