Vietnam is temporarily leading Group A following their commanding win over Singapore.

Despite Singapore’s concerted efforts, they were unable to cause any difficulties for the Vietnamese side.

The players of coach Mai Duc Chung enjoyed an early lead thanks to Nguyen Thi Lieu’s opening goal after eight minutes. Soon after, Nguyen Thi Muon doubled the advantage for Vietnam as Singapore’s defensive line had yet to recover from the first goal.

The fabulous start gave a strong boost to Vietnam’s confidence, inspiring them on to five additional goals in the remainder of the first half – one by Minh Nguyet, one by Vu Thi Nhung, one by Nguyen Thi Xuyen and two by Tuyet Dung.

Vietnam maintained their absolute domination after the break, managing to kick the same number of goals as in the first half of the match, thus securing a massive 14-0 victory against Singapore.

Among the 14 goals scored by Vietnamese players, Nguyen Thi Muon and Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung accounted for four each, which has put them in front of the race for the tournament’s top scorer title.

In another Group A match earlier the same day, reigning champions Thailand broke no sweat to defeat the Philippines with a score of 4-0.

Next up for Vietnam will be a group matchup against the Philippines on July 28.

The 2016 AFF Women’s Championship is taking place in Myanmar from July 26 to August 4. Vietnam has been drawn in Group A along with Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines. Group B is made up of Myanmar, Malaysia, Timor Leste and U20 Australia.

The eight teams are competing in a groupstage round robin tournament, with the top two teams of each group advancing into the semifinals.
