Set 2 saw Vietnam start well but trail 11-16 before middle blocker Nhu Anh entered and turned the tide, sealing a 25-21 comeback. Puerto Rico took set 3, 25-23, after a tense battle marked by a few late errors from Vietnam.
In set 4, Vietnam tightened their blocks and attacked with precision, holding off Puerto Rico’s push to win 25-22 and clinch the match.
Earlier, Vietnam shocked the volleyball world by defeating ninth-ranked Serbia 3-1 - an opponent 18 places above them in the rankings. The team opened with a confident 25-21 win in set 1, lost set 2 narrowly 23-25, then surged back to take set 3 (25-22) and sealed the upset in set 4 (25-23) with stellar blocking and smart play.
These results follow Vietnam’s 3-0 victory over host Indonesia in their opening match, making them one of the tournament’s surprise packages and signaling a new era for the nation’s youth volleyball program.
