During the visit, the Deputy FM met President of the Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay Jose Carlos Mahia, and held talks with Vice Minister of External Relations Jose Luis Cancela.

Both sides also signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and the Uruguayan Diplomatic Institute.

During meetings and talks, the Uruguayan side considered Vietnam as one of the leading important partners in Asia-Pacific.

Host and guest underscored the need to regularly maintain the political consultation mechanism to deepen practical and effective ties. They reviewed the implementation of important cooperation documents, thus creating a favourable legal framework for bilateral partnership.

Discussing specific steps to reinforce economic, trade, investment ties in agriculture, animal husbandry, agro-fisheries processing and biotechnology, they agreed to soon convene a meeting of the Joint Committee on Economic-Trade-Investment Cooperation as well as help the two countries’ businesses access respective market and boost joint work across culture, training, tourism and sport on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties (August 11, 1993 – August 11, 2018).

On regional and global issues of shared concern, the two sides vowed to continue promoting ties between ASEAN and the Common Market of South America (MERCOSUR), and other inter-regional cooperation mechanisms.

They shared stance on supporting the settlement of sovereignty disputes via dialogues and peaceful means, in line with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
