Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army Vo Van Tuan made the statement at a reception for First Counselor of France’s Embassy in Vietnam Remi Lambert, in Hanoi on December 8.
He highly valued the experience shared by French experts at a recent workshop in Hanoi on the dispatch of a sapper unit to UN peacekeeping missions.
The workshop was co-organised by the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre and the French Embassy in Vietnam on December 7.
This activity demonstrated the commitments of the two countries’ Ministries of Defence to implementing technical cooperation agreements in the field, Tuan said.
Remi Lambert reported on the outcomes of the workshop, saying Vietnamese and French experts discussed tasks and challenges in conducting peacekeeping activities as well as organising, equipping and training a sapper unit.
Vietnam officially joined the UN peacekeeping activities in 2014. So far, 12 Vietnamese officials have been deployed to do missions at UN operations in South Sudan and Central African Republic.
The country has also dispatched 83 officials to join short-term training courses at the invitation of the UN and in the framework of regional and international cooperation.
