By hosting the second DPRK-USA Summit, Vietnam has showed its foreign policy, resolve and desire to contribute to peace and stability in the region and the world at large, said a senior diplomat.

Talking with reporters at the International Media Centre (IMC) on February 27, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung said through the summit, Vietnam also wants to strengthen relations with both US and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Vietnam expects that international friends, including foreign reporters, get a better insight into the country as well as its people and socio-economic development, he said.

Regarding the appreciation from senior US officials for the hosting of the summit, Trung said the appraisement is objective, indicating their respect for the host country. Just in almost 10 days, Vietnam has accomplished all necessary preparations in terms of security, infrastructure, accommodation facilities, information equipment for operations of thousands of reporters and other logistic services, he elaborated.

For the DPRK, the two sides have exchanged views on many issues and closely cooperated together to ensure the success of the DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam, the deputy minister added.

According to the diplomat, almost 3,000 foreign reporters registered to cover the summit, the highest number of journalists coming to Vietnam so far. The establishment of the IMC at the Friendship Culture Palace in downtown Hanoi aims to create the best conditions for operations of international journalists.

Vietnam has mobilised a large number of personnel from the police, army, ministries, sectors, Hanoi and other localities to ensure security for the summit as well as meetings between US leaders and Vietnamese counterparts, he said, adding that on this occasion, DPRK Chairman Kim Jong-un will also pay an official friendship visit to Vietnam and DPRK officials will make a trip to northeastern Quang Ninh province and northern port city of Hai Phong.

On the second DPRK-USA Summit, Trung held that the two sides may reach a number of positive outcomes as they had achieved encouraging results at the first summit in Singapore in June 2018.

In regard to Vietnam-US relations, the diplomat said high-level meetings between the two sides have not only showed the development of the bilateral relationship but also proved themselves as an important method to further enhance the ties.

US President Donald Trump has come to Vietnam to attend the second DPRK-USA Summit and have separate meetings with senior Vietnamese leaders, he said, stressing that this indicated both Vietnam and the US have treasured the bilateral relationship.

Trung went on to say that during the meetings, senior leaders of Vietnam and the US discussed a wide range of issues regarding multifaceted cooperation and witnessed the signing of  economic deals, thus contributing to the enhancement of the bilateral ties in the time to come.-VNA
