In the early hours of January 14, the official aircraft carrying Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Vladimirovich Mishustin and a high-ranking delegation from the Russian Federation landed in Hanoi. The visit, taking place over two days, is at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
This marks Prime Minister Mishustin's first official visit to Vietnam in his capacity as Russia's head of government. It also represents the first visit by a foreign leader to Vietnam in the new year of 2025.
The Russian delegation includes Deputy Prime Ministers Alexey Overchuk and Dmitry Nikolayevich Chernyshenko, who also serves as the Chairman of the Russian division in the Intergovernmental Committee on Economic, Trade, and Scientific-Technical Cooperation between Vietnam and Russia.
Accompanying them are ministers overseeing trade, culture, economic development, finance, and digital development, among others.
Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Gennady Bezdetko and leaders from various ministries and localities are also part of the delegation.
To welcome the delegation at Noi Bai International Airport, Vietnam sent a reception group including Minister and Chairman of the Government Office Tran Van Son, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang, Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Dang Minh Khoi, and representatives from key agencies.
Prime Minister Mishustin’s visit begins a series of events commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Russia, established on January 30, 1950.
This afternoon, Prime Minister Mishustin will participate in a formal welcoming ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the Presidential Palace. Following the ceremony, the two leaders will engage in bilateral talks and witness the signing of cooperation agreements.
Discussions will focus on reviewing existing bilateral cooperation, addressing challenges, and exploring solutions.
The leaders aim to assess the progress of joint projects, particularly in energy and industrial sectors, and to propose new areas for collaboration to strengthen the strategic partnership.
The Russian prime minister is also scheduled to meet with other top Vietnamese leaders, attend a cultural performance, and connect with prominent Vietnamese and Russian business representatives.
Russian Ambassador Gennady Bezdetko highlighted the significance of this visit, calling it a symbolic event ahead of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
According to Bezdetko, the key to fostering and strengthening the Vietnam-Russia relationship lies in maintaining meaningful, high-level political dialogue.
"I believe the meetings and negotiations during Prime Minister Mishustin's visit will generate fresh momentum for enhancing cooperation in traditional areas and exploring promising new fields, all based on friendship, mutual understanding, and the comprehensive strategic partnership," the ambassador stated.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Dang Minh Khoi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the visit underscores the mutual importance both nations place on their long-standing friendship and their commitment to further deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
This visit is a pivotal event in the bilateral relations of 2025, aimed at advancing the strategic directions agreed upon during recent high-level engagements, including Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to Vietnam in June 2024 and a phone conversation between General Secretary To Lam and President Putin in August 2024.
