Vietnam produced a determined performance against China in the women’s football quarterfinals at ASIAD 2026, holding their stronger opponents scoreless through 90 minutes before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in extra time.

China applied sustained pressure but struggled to break down Vietnam’s well-organized defense. Goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh made a series of important saves, repeatedly denying Wang Shuang and her teammates.

Vietnam were not content simply to defend. They showed confidence in possession at times and looked for opportunities on the counterattack, with the two sides still locked at 0-0 at the end of regulation time.

The Vietnamese defense continued to hold firm during the first period of extra time, while Kim Thanh remained a commanding presence in goal.

Vietnam even threatened at the other end. Shortly after the start of the second period of extra time, a dangerous move created an opportunity inside the Chinese penalty area, but the chance went begging.

The breakthrough finally came in the 109th minute.

Wang Shuang found space close to goal and finished to put China 1-0 ahead, ending more than 100 minutes of resistance from Vietnam.

China had an opportunity to double their advantage in the closing stages, but Wang Shuang fired over with the goal exposed after Yuan Cong had beaten Kim Thanh.

Vietnam could not find an equalizer before the final whistle, bringing their ASIAD 2026 campaign to an end in the quarterfinals.

Despite the 1-0 defeat, Kim Thanh and her teammates delivered a spirited performance against one of Asia’s traditional powers, forcing China to play 120 minutes to secure their semifinal place.
