Duo Do Tuan Duc and Pham Nhu Thao advanced to the second round of the Yonex Canada Open, the badminton tournament which began in Calgary City on June 29.

The Vietnamese pair won 18-21, 21-15, 21-11 against Bauer and Kyleigh O’Donoghue of the host nation in the first match of the mixed doubles event.

Their next rivals will be another Canadian pair Nathan Osborne and Josephine Wu.

In the men’s doubles, Minh Bao and Duong Bao Duc of Vietnam came from behind to defeat Austin Bauer and Ty Lindeman of Canada 10-21, 21-17, 21-19.

They will next meet Ted Chen and Liao Chao Hsiang from Canada and Chinese Taipei, respectively.

Vu Thi Trang was stopped in the women’s singles event after losing 22-10, 24-26, 17-21 to Laura Sarosi of Hungary in the first round match.

Earlier, she and teammate Duc were ousted from the mixed doubles event losing 2113, 12-21, 9-21 to Toby Ng and Rachel Honderich of Canada.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s No. 1 player Nguyen Tien Minh suddenly withdrew from the men’s singles event. Seeded No. 5 at the tournament, Minh was to play the second round game against Indian Harsheel Dani but right before the match Minh decided to quit without announcing a reason.

The Canada Open will end on Sunday.
