The number of Vietnamese students pursuing postsecondary studies at American colleges and universities have multiplied by 14.3%, to top 21,403 in the 2015-16 academic year, according to the annual Open Doors report.
The report by the Institute of International Education, produced with funding from the US Department of State, showed that Vietnamese students rank as the sixth largest population of foreign student enrolments in the US.
The Vietnamese enrollments breakdown as follows: undergraduate level (67.2%), graduate level (15.1%) optional practical training (7.8%), English programs and short-term training (9.9%).
Notably, the number of international students studying at colleges and universities in the US has also jumped 7% surpassing the one million threshold for the first time ever during the academic year 2015-2016.
US ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius underscored the importance of Vietnamese students studying at universities in the US, saying they not only help the American people learn more about Vietnamese but make significant contribution to their own nation upon their return home.
