The 19-year-old, born in the southern province of Tay Ninh, defeated Chinese Zhou Shenghao 6-1, 6-1.

Nam, the world's No 912, completely dominated the match against Zhou, the world's No 1,176, playing for a total of one hour and seven minutes.

The Vietnamese player will meet Chinese Zhong Suhao or He Yecong in the next round.

Earlier, Nam and Jeson Patrombon of the Philippines were ousted from the event's doubles category.
