Vietnamese first ranked racer Nguyen Thi That overtook the competition on the track, becoming the winner of the first stage of 2018’s one-day woman’s cycle race Dwars door de Westhoek, held and concluded in Belgium on Sunday (June 3).

The race is hosted by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body for sports cycling and overseas international competitive cycling events.

It attracts over 150 cyclists from many nations around the world every year.

That competed in the jersey of the UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC), where she received her training.

At the 125km long first stage of the race, she successfully took the first group, then beat other competitors at the finish line.

The female cyclist, from the southern province of An Giang, reached the finish line after having the best overall time at 03:14.20, with average speed of 38.59km/h. Wiebes Lorena from the Netherlands took the second rank, followed by Italian Balsamo Elisa.

That's impressive peformance in recent international tours has earned her the position of 61st in the world cyclist rankings. Alongside winning the gold medal in Asiad 2018, she also aims to compete in the 2020 Olympics, to be held in Japan. — VNS
