Tired of the noise, a man in the central province of Quang Ngai has opted to live alone in the deep forest for the past 20 years.
Ho Van Chau, 68, has been living well on Ca Dam Mountain in Tra Bong District since 1997 when he decided to leave his crowded and noisy village. The man who is from Cor ethnic minority group now lives in a simple tent set up on a large stone from tree branches and leaves. Chau said he has built five tents over the past 20 years. Sometimes his relatives bring him some metal sheets to make stronger roofs.
The forest man spends most of the time growing rice, vegetables, hunting and making essential equipment. He makes farming tools and various kinds of utensils from wood. The fireplace is the most important area of his tent where he cooks, eats, and sleeps during cold days. He uses water from a nearby spring.
Chau has never returned to his village over the past 20 years. Sometimes he meets people looking for wood in the forest. Twice a year his relatives bring him some essentials things like salt, sugar and clothes. The man looks very healthy at his age. He said he has never seen doctors since he came to live here. If he feels unwell sometimes, he would treat himself with locally-available plants and herbs. Chau looks very happy and optimistic. "I live alone but I don't feel lonely," he said. "I love this quiet and peaceful place. I will choose to end my life here but not in the village." |
