The pair finished third in the final round with a time of 7:7.32 to qualify for the Brazil Olympics.

The Japanese and South Korean pairs came first and second with times of 7:3.19 and 7:6.89, respectively.

Thao and Huyen had won two gold medals in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore last year.

Earlier, another Vietnamese athlete, Pham Thi Hue, also qualified for the Brazil Olympics, the world’s biggest sports tournament to be held this summer. She came second in the women’s single sculls during the semifinal round with a time of 8:0.53.

However, according to the rules of the International Rowing Federation, each nation can only accquire two tickets for Brazil – one for male and one for female rowers. Although Vietnam’s rowing team have qualified for two slots, Vietnamese sports leaders will decide whether to send either Hue or the pair Thao and Huyen to Brazil.

So far, Vietnam has earned 15 Olympic slots.
