The national team had originally been scheduled to play against El Salvador at the tournament which will take place in Thailand during June.

According to the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), El Salvador are unable to participate in the tournament due to a scheduling conflict.

The Caribbean island of Curacao is currently ranked 82nd in the world rankings, 16 places above Vietnam.

The two other teams competing in the competition include India, 101 in the rankings, and host nation Thailand, 114 in the rankings.

The four participating teams will play two games at the tournament, with the winners of each match playing each other in the final. The two losing teams will take part in a third place match.

As the tournament takes place on pre-arranged FIFA dates, goalkeeper Dang Van Lam, forward Cong Phuong, and midfielder Xuan Truong will have chance to play for the national team if the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) requests their clubs to release them.

The result of the King’s Cup 2019 will contribute to the team’s FIFA rankings.

If Vietnam wins the tournament, the team will have the advantage of increasing their position in the world rankings ahead of the draw for qualification to the 2022 World Cup.
