Chien books a berth in the second round of the Three-Cushion World Cup being held in Luxor, Egypt.

Chien, who is world No 15, beat Jean Paul de Bruijn of the Netherlands 40-30 on table 2 on Thursday. He had a smooth start and led 24-1 in six innings.

The three-cushion billiards match then got tough with the Dutchman coming close, but Chien managed to wrap up his win in 16 innings.

Next, he will play Cho Myung-woo of South Korea, who saw a quick 16-innings win against Belgian Eddy Merckx.

The two other Vietnamese participating in the tournament have been ousted from the event. Ma Minh Cam lost 36-40 to South Korea’s Kim Haeng-jik, while Ma Xuan Cuong lost 24-40 to former world champion Choi Sung-won, also from South Korea.

In other matches, world No. 1 Dick Jaspers of the Netherlands put a quick end to the dreams of Turkish Birol Uymaz 40-19 in 17 innings.

Can Capak of Turkey made a strong comeback after 28-16 against Cho Jae-ho of South Korea and levelled the score at the end (40-40 in 21).

In the shoot-out, the Turk triumphed 2-1.

Turkish Tayfun Tasdemir showed fighting spirit until the bitter end against South Korean Lee Choong-bok and was rewarded.

The equaliser with five led to the shoot-out. The Korean started with one, Tasdemir scored twice and passed the finish line as the winner.
