The Vietnamese defeated Hardeep Singh Sandhu of the host country 6-3, 6-3 in the men’s singles event.

Unseeded Nam will next play No 5 seed Rawat Sidharth, another Indian player. Sidharth beat Thai Puriwat Chatpatcharoen 6-1, 7-6 (7) in his first round match.

The tournament which provides US$10,000 to the winners will close on May 15.

Luận wins stage, Triết takes jerseys in cycling cup

Nguyễn Minh Luận of Vĩnh Long won the 58km second stage of the Hạt Ngọc Trời Cycling Cup yesterday with a time of 1hr 23.10min from An Giang Province to Đồng Tháp Province.

Huỳnh Thanh Tùng of Military Zone 7 and Nguyễn Hoàng Giang of An Giang came second and third, respectively.

Nguyễn Minh Triết who took the 38km first stage around Long Xuyên City earlier in the day claimed the yellow jersey for the leader after two stages. He also kept the green jersey for best sprinter. Giang and Luận were close behind them. In the team event, thanks to their talented Triết, An Giang claimed first position, followed by Military Zone 7 and Vĩnh Long.

In the amateur category, retired national team member Nguyễn Nam Cực was on top and his Cà Mau Fertilizers crew led the team ranking.

Today, cyclists will tour the 42km third stage around Đồng Tháp’s Cao Lãnh City.

Hà Nội 1, HCM City 1 win first-round matches

Hà Nội 1 defeated Hà Nội 2 4-0 in the first-round match of the National Women’s Football Championship yesterday in Hà Nam Province.

Nguyễn Thị Muôn scored a double, while Phạm Hải Yến and Nguyễn Thị Huế took one each to take the first win for the former champions.

In an earlier match at Hà Nam Stadium, defending Champions HCM City 1 trounced HCM City 2 5-0.

Although they did not use their strongest squad, HCM City 1 easily set up their domination before pocketing five goals in which Lê Hoài Lương netted twice.

The win pushed HMC City 1 to the top of the ranking, followed by Hà Nội 1 and Thái Nguyên.

Teams will have a day off today before returning to the action tomorrow.

Việt Nam Coal and Minerals will play Sơn La and Thái Nguyên will meet hosts Phong Phú Hà Nam.
