The Viettel R&D Center, with a budget of $400 million, is expected to be completed by 2030.
Viettel has announced the official groundbreaking of the An Khanh Data Center and the Viettel Research & Development Center on August 19.
These projects are part of a nationwide campaign marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2, featuring the simultaneous launch and inauguration of 250 projects across 34 provinces and cities, with a combined investment of approximately $50 billion.
Both initiatives are foundational to affirm Viettel’s pioneering role in implementing Resolution 57 of the Politburo on the development of a national system of research centers, experimental labs, and key strategic technology facilities.
The Viettel Research & Development Center is a $400 million project spanning 13 hectares in the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park. It will consist of six smart buildings and is scheduled for completion by 2030. This center will serve as a comprehensive innovation hub, encompassing the entire process from research and design to prototyping and manufacturing of advanced "Made in Vietnam" technologies.
Viettel is leading efforts in mastering the development of missile technology, cruise engines, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), remote sensing satellites, radar systems, and other military equipment to enhance national defense capabilities. Simultaneously, the center will pursue applications of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing to create cutting-edge devices, software, platforms, and services aligned with global technology trends and market demands.
The buildings will be constructed to international standards, integrating smart, green, and sustainable design elements that meet both technical and environmental requirements. Security will be paramount, with a state-of-the-art multi-layer protection system ensuring absolute safety.
The facility is expected to recruit 2,500 highly skilled professionals, serving strategic missions defined by the Party, the State, and the Ministry of National Defense, particularly in military equipment development to modernize the armed forces and strengthen national defense in a new context.
The An Khanh Data Center will cover 1.9 hectares with a total investment of 17.5 trillion VND (approximately $700 million). With a planned power capacity of 60MW, it is expected to be the largest data center in northern Vietnam.
The first phase of operations is scheduled to begin in Q2 2026. By 2030, it will be upgraded to become Viettel’s second hyperscale data center. The facility is designed to meet Uptime Tier III standards and will integrate Viettel-developed AI systems, a five-layer security system, and advanced cooling technologies that support sustainable operations, aligned with the government’s Net Zero goal.
As a critical part of the national digital infrastructure, the data center will support the digital transformation of the government, the Ministry of National Defense, large enterprises, and national-scale AI deployment.
General Director of Viettel, Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang, emphasized: “These facilities are integral to Viettel’s mission to develop science, technology, and defense industries, while contributing to national security. We are committed to ensuring these projects meet international quality standards and are completed on schedule. They will not only serve today’s research needs but also become lasting foundations for future generations.”
In 2025 alone, Viettel has launched several strategically significant infrastructure projects, including the Tan Phu Trung Data Center and the Viettel Tower in Da Nang. These initiatives aim to enhance Vietnam’s technological infrastructure in support of national defense and digital transformation objectives.
