Hung, a member of the Party Central Committee, was born in 1962 in the northern province of Phu Tho. He has replaced Truong Minh Tuan, who was forced to step down as Party secretary of the MIC following charges of serious violations at the ministry during the 2011-2016 tenure.

Hung has been working as the general director of Viettel since March 2014. He was appointed chairman of the group last month.

The new secretary of the Party Committee earned a master’s degree in telecommunications from the University of Sydney, Australia. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the National Economics University in Hanoi City.

Hung is considered the captain of Viettel, with considerable success in the strategy of introducing telecom services to rural areas.

Viettel has developed telecom infrastructure in 10 countries to serve a customer base of more than 90 million people across Asia, Africa and the United States.

On Monday, Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang suspended Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan for violations in the now cancelled acquisition of private pay TV firm An Vien Group by MobiFone Telecommunications Corporation. Earlier, the Politburo took disciplinary action against the minister in accordance with the Party line.
