Hùng was defeated 7-15 by South Korean Lee Jonghyun, who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, in the final to settle for the silver medal.

Earlier, Hung crushed Kim Giwon of South Korea 15-14 in the semifinal and before that overcame his teammate To Duc Anh 15-5 in the quarterfinal.

This is the first medal for the Viet Nam delegation at this event.

The tournament has attracted 247 fencers from 21 countries and territories, including Australia, China’s Hong Kong, Saudi Arab and Kuwait, as well as Thailand, Uzbekistan and Lebanon.

Participants are competing in men’s and women’s individual and team events in the sabre, foil and epee categories.

The competition, which is co-organised by the Viet Nam Fencing Federation and the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, ends on October 31. — VNS
