Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh will lead a Vietnamese delegation to attend the 2016 Nuclear Industry Summit (NIS 2016) in Washington, D.C. from March 31- April 1.

The event will bring together high-ranking leaders from 52 nations, the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Union and the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

The summit will review the achievements of the three previous summits and exchange measures to enhance nuclear security and reduce the threat to nuclear terrorism in the future.

Leaders will approve a specific action plan with five main international initiatives/ mechanisms, including the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism and the Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction.

The Vietnamese delegation's participation affirms and highlights the country's consistent policy of completely disarming weapon of mass destruction, including nuclear weapon, using nuclear energy for peaceful purpose, ensuring nuclear safety and security and strongly condemning the use of nuclear energy threat to international and regional peace, stability and security.

Viet Nam has made efforts in realizing political commitments, including the participation in the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and approving the Additional Protocol to the IAEA’s Safeguards Agreement in 2012.

The nation also joined the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and Radioactive Waste Management in 2013 and the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI-2014).
