Two hundred young athletes from 26 cities and provinces across the country gathered on Wednesay in northern Bac Ninh Province for this year’s national youth weightlifting tournament.

The national event is an opportunity to recruit the country’s best talents to compete on the international stage. 

Head of weightlifting under the General Department of Sports, Do Dinh Khang, said the tournament this year, which draws a record number of athletes, is an opportunity for young athletes to compete as well as for the department to select the best talents for upcoming international events, especially the 2018 Youth Olympics Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Weightlifting is one of the country’s sporting strengths that has been making a name for itself on the international stage in recent years, including last year’s 16-year-old World champion Le Nguyen Quoc Bao (under 50kg).
