Thu on Tuesday defeated Catarina Martins of Portugal 21-9, 21-8. Earlier, she got a bye in the first round. Thu then beat Clara Lassaux from Belgium 21-14, 21-12 in the second round.
The Vietnamese will next play No 8 seed, Aakarshi Kashyap of India, who won 21-13, 21-14 over Hana Mohamed of Egypt on Tuesday.
In the men’s singles, Le Thanh Lam of Viet Nam was eliminated from the second round and Nguyen Hai Dang was out after the third round.
Lam and Nguyen Xuan Manh competed in the men’s doubles but they could win only one match before they lost in the second round.
Thu and Dang were ousted early in the first round of the mixed doubles event.
The 19th tournament offers six categories. The team event closed with China taking the title. They were followed by Malaysia, while South Korea and Japan shared the third place. The men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles will be organised until Sunday.
