Hosts Viet Nam triumphed in the Asian Beach Games 5 (ABG5) after 10 competition days, bagging 52 gold, 44 silver and 43 bronze medals in 14 sports.

Thailand came in second in terms of the medal tally with 36 golds, 24 silvers and 30 bronzes, while China was third with 12 golds, 18 silvers and 19 bronzes.

On the last competition day yesterday, VN won a gold medal after beating South Korea 3-0 in the men’s sepak takraw final.

The hosts took the first win in the first regu, 21-15, 21-9 before crusing the rival team 21-17, 21-13 in the second regu.

In the third and final regu, VN completed the final with a 21-7, 21-7 win.

Phung Thi Phuong of VN pocketed a gold in the women’s stroke single of Woodball event.

Phuong did her all out to beat opponents Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Indonesia and South Korea in the final at Sơn Thuỷ beach yesterday to stand on victory podium.

Chiang Fang-Yu of Chinese Taipei and Yulianingsih Ika of Indonesia ranked second and third place, respectively.

In the men’s stroke single final, Sumariyanto Ahris of Indonesia won gold, beating off Cheenkurd Jetsada of Thailand, who bagged silver, and Kim Pyo Hwan from Korea, in third for bronze.

Duo Perreira Jefferson and Samba of Qatar took gold medal of the men’s beach volleyball after winning the all-Qatari final over Cherif Junior Julio and Janko Ahmed Tijan 21-14, 21-15.

Radarong Varapatsorn and Udomchavee Tanarattha of Thailand beat Chinese Wang Xinxin and Tang Ningya 21-15, 21-18 to win gold in the women’s beach volleyball.

Japan grabbed gold in the beach football with a 4-3 win over Oman in the men’s final.

Oba Takaaki and Moreira Ozu scored twice each for Japan, while Al-Oraimi Khalid Khamis Mohammed scored twice and Al Zadjali Nooh Salim Abdullah added one for Oman.

Lebanon was awarded a bronze medal with a 9-5 win over Afghanistan in the third place match.

Host athletes won five out of 11 gold medals in the men’s and women’s categories of the Vietnamese traditional martial art in the last competition day of the sport.

In the first final match of the men’s under 50kg, Dang Tran Anh Tuan could not beat Pormehr Yaser of Iran.

Nguyen Thi Ai Van became the first Vietnamese winner in the event yesterday by beating Khiev Chendaroth of Cambodia in the women’s under 48kg class.

Phommakhamthong Khavy from Laos recorded a knock-out win over Vietnamese Huỳnh Hữu Dương in the men’s from 50kg to 55kg category, taking a gold medal for Laos.

Lao artist Soukaphone Khamla also defeated Hoang Ky Anh of VN in the men’s from 55kg to 60kg class to bag a gold.

Indian More Shweta Ramdas also beat the host Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung in the women’s from 48kg to 52kg class for a gold medal.

Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai took a 2-0 win over Phouthong Ehpriyanut of Cambodia in the women’s from 52kg to 56kg final.

Bui Le Tan Vu won gold with a win over Cambodian Soy Phan Nich in the final of the men’s from 60kg to 65kg division.

Cambodian Try Sothavy took a knock-out win over Vietnamese Ho Thi Hien in the women’s from 56kg to 60kg class.

Nguyen Minh Hieu edged a 2-1 win over Iranian Yazdani Hossein in the men’s from 65kg to 70kg final.

In the men’s open class, Gholamiseyedkolaei Seyedmohsen of Iran overpowered in the fight against Vietnamese Tran Trung Hau to win a gold for Iran.

Vo Thi Phuong Hieu also won gold after beating Cambodian Vy Srey Khouch in the women’s open category.

Vietnamese Lam Dong Vuong and Tran The Phuong had a perfect performance in the men’s dual Matchete Form of the Vovinam event for gold medal.

They scored 275 points to beat Cambodian Chin Piseth and Chren Bunlong, who scored 269 points for a silver, and Indian Alok Kumar and Singh Prashant, 261 for a bronze.

In the men’s dual form number 3, Myanmar’s duo Bo Bo and Ma Na Kui won gold medal for their 274 points performance.

Vietnamese Lam Tri Linh and Le Toan Trung ranked second with 270 points, while Cambodian Prak Sovanny and Sok Sambat placed third with 261 points.

Vietnamese Le Thi Thuong and Mai Thi Kim Thuy excelled in the women’s Dual Sword Form final, scoring 276 points to win gold.

Silver and bronze medals went to Myanmar’s Hnin Thida and Khine war Phoo and Cambodia’s Pov Sokha and Soeur Chanleakhena.

Wrestler Hassan Tabar Jelodar Omid of Iran bagged a gold medal when he overcame Aunjai Chanwit from Thailand in the men’s under 80kg of wrestling event.

South Korean Gong Byungmin and Batchuluun Ankhbayar of Mongolia were awarded bronze medals

Gong Byungmin beat Eto Noritomo of Japan, while Batchuluun Ankhbayar beat Butt Muhammad Asad of Pakistan.

In the men’s under 90kg, Inam Muhammad of Pakistan edged out Sadatitilehboni Seyyed Mohammad of Iran to win a gold.

In the men’s over 90kg class of Sambo, Boldpurev Unurjargal from Mongolia took home a gold after deffeating Yalkapov Nurali of Turkmenistan.

Nguyen Thi  Như Y bagged a gold for VN in the Sambo event when she beat Japanese Murase Haruka in the women’s over 72kg category.

’Stuffed langurs’ gift

The central city presented stuffed red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathryx nemaeus) as gifts to sport delegations participating in the ABG5.

The city’s Foreign Affairs department said the gifts would help the city promote the protection of critically endangered primates in the Sơn Trà forest.

The vice chairman of the city’s people’s committee, Dang Viet Dung said the tournament was an opportunity for the city to boost tourism and awareness of environmental friendliness and biodiversity among sport competitors.

Dung said the endangered langur would make an impression on ABG5 participants and and visitors, as well as on people worldwide.

The gift was developed cooperatively by Da Nang and the Biodiversity Conservation Centre of GreenViet. The stuffed langurs will be mass produced to sell to international visitors in the city.
