Watermelon farmers in the central province of Quang Ngai are suffering from heavy losses as China halted purchases which have resulted in the sharp price fall.

To date, up to around 3,000 tonnes of watermelon in Phu Ninh District need to be sold.

On May 9, watermelon was piled along roads in many communes of Phu Ninh District. Meanwhile, rain has seriously affected the watermelons.

A farmer in Phu Ninh said that China had halted watermelon imports, resulting in slow sales and falling prices. A kilo of watermelon has dropped to VND1,000 (4.3 cent) from VND6,000 earlier.

Le Thi Trong in Phu Ninh District’s Tam Dan Commune said she heard that one group would come to the locality to help buy watermelons. However, she has not seen someone come to do this over the past two days. Now, she is willing to sell watermelons at VND1,000 per kilo.

According to Nguyen Cong Thanh from Fm Style Shop in Danang City, over the past six days, his shop had bought nearly 2,000 tonnes of watermelon in Phu Ninh District with the prices of VND3,000-4,000 per kilo.
