Le Thanh Hai, deputy general director of the General Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, said the spells of hot weather were caused by hot low pressure zones in the western part of the Asian mainland, combined with foehn wind effects from the Sichuan basin.

Foehn is a hot dry wind, which, on the way to the southeast, lost steam due to high temperatures. On hot sunny days, the humidity in the northern and central regions fell sharply. As of July 7, the spell of hot weather had lasted for nine consecutive days.

However, the heat wave was milder than the one in 2017, when the temperature reached 41.8oC. In 2010, Vietnam had a hot spell lasting 10 days, while in 2015, there was a spell of 11 days due to El Niño.

Two spells of hot weather and two typhoons are expected to come in July, one of which may affect the mainland. It is expected that two typhoons will arrive monthly in July, August, September and October.

While the official temperature reported by the meteorology and hydrology agency was at 40oC, people believed that the real temperature reached 42oC.

Foehn is a hot dry wind, which, on the way to the southeast, lost steam due to high temperatures. On hot sunny days, the humidity in the northern and central regions fell sharply. As of July 7, the spell of hot weather had lasted for nine consecutive days.

In some localities, people measured the temperature at 45oC, high enough to boil shrimp and egg under the sun.

Hai said the temperature reported by his agency was measured at the meteorological garden in a wooden house, which is lower than in the open air.

The agency only reports temperature levels in accordance with meteorological observation standards. The temperature in urban areas could be 1-4oC higher.

Sunshine and heat are considered one of the 19 types of natural disasters in the Disaster Prevention Law. Many people died in the last global heat wave.

Unlike reptiles, the human body temperature is relatively stable and the temperature on the skin is about 32-33oC.

Excessive sweating causes loss of salt, dizziness, high fever, even coma. If patients suffer from sunstroke and cannot get timely treatment, they will die.

A report said that Vietnam has had 14 types of natural disasters so far this year, including two storms, two tropical depressions, 88 thunderstorms and tornadoes, seven flash floods, landslides, seven strong winds in the sea, and four spells of serious cold.
