Dr. Philipp Rösler, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and former German Vice-Chancellor, met young Vietnamese in Hanoi on April 25 to discuss startups in the context of global integration.

The meeting was held in the UP co-working space and be a chance for Vietnam’s younger generation, especially members of the Global Shapers Hanoi Hub (GSC Hanoi Hub) and members of Young Global Leaders (YGLs) as well as startup entrepreneurs, to discuss development opportunities with Dr. Rösler.

Dr. Philipp Rösler

Dr. Philipp Rösler is currently Managing Director of the World Economic Forum. He was born in Vietnam in 1973 but was adopted in Germany at the age of nine months. He was trained as a Medical Specialist and earned a PhD at the Hanover Medical School before moving into politics. He was the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology and then Vice Chancellor of Germany from 2011 to 2013. In this same period he was also Chairman of the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP). He was the first cabinet minister in Germany with an Asian background.

Global Shapers Community (GSC) and GSC Hanoi Hub

The Global Shapers Community is the 14th community member of the World Economic Forum and is developed and led by young leaders between 20 and 30 years old. They are selected based of their achievements, leadership potential, and commitment to make a difference in society. Given that “50 per cent of the world’s population is under 27,” Professor Klaus Schwab, World Economic Forum Founder and Executive Chairman, believes that “this generation has the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit to shape the future.”

In Vietnam, Global Shapers are based in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with a total membership of more than 30. All have been and continue to be actively contributing to society through diverse activities with the aim of solving socioeconomic issues such as clean water supply, youth unemployment, technological development, and green energy research.
