VietNamNet Bridge - Hanoi National University and HCM City University of Science & Tech nology produce the highest number of graduates who go on to become entrepreneurs, according to a survey.  

iPrice cooperated with 500 Startups and well-known investment funds in Vietnam to conduct a survey on 27 startups and 56 entrepreneurs to learn more about the education of founders of startups which have raised funds for Series A. 

Of the 56 founders, six studied at the Hanoi National University, while five graduated from the HCM City University of Science and Technology.

The list of the schools in Vietnam which produce the most entrepreneurs also includes the Hanoi University of Science & Technology, the University for Foreign Trade, HCM City Economics University and HCM City National University.

Two foreign schools are included in the list, University of Moscow (four graduates) and University of California (three graduates), considered one of the big incubators of technology startups for Silicon Valley.

The majority of the founders studied at top-tier schools in Vietnam. Hanoi National University and Hanoi University of Science & Technology are in the first and second positions among Vietnamese schools in Webometrics 2007.

HCMC University of Science & Technology and University of Foreign Trade are in the sixth and seventh position, while HCMC National University is 18th on Webometrics list.

Up to 61 percent of the 56 entrepreneurs do not have a bachelor’s degree in IT, while many founders chose to study business. Business administration, finance and economics are the three most popular majors of the founders of Appota, Foody, Momo (e-wallet), Sendo, Topica, Vat gia, Vexere, Huy dong and The Gioi Di Dong (Mobile World), the largest mobile phone distribution chain.

Of 56 founders, 23 graduated from schools in Vietnam, and 33 from foreign schools. While they mostly obtained bachelor’s degree in economics from foreign schools, those with bachelor’s degree in technology graduated from Vietnamese schools. The combination of overseas business skills and technical training in Vietnam helped to ensure successful startups.

Hanoi and HCM City, called the cradle of technology startups and software programmers, are believed to be at the same level with Singapore. However, very few Vietnamese startups can call for Series A capital because they do not have opportunities to access foreign capital. 

The survey found that the US was the country where many of them studied, with 14 entrepreneurs attending university there.
