Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max next month, leaving many users with a familiar dilemma: buy a new iPhone now or wait for the next generation?

At this point in the annual iPhone cycle, the usual advice is to wait patiently for the new models. This year, however, could be an exception, particularly for anyone considering a Pro model.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max could offer better value

Around this time every year, the common advice is to hold off for the next iPhone generation unless your current phone is broken or no longer meets your needs.

But with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, things could be different. Several signs suggest Apple may raise prices for both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The exact increase has yet to be confirmed, but current rumors suggest the starting prices of the two models could be $200-$300 higher.

Reports circulating online suggest the iPhone 18 Pro could start at $1,299-$1,399, a significant increase from the $1,099 starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could start at $1,399-$1,499, up from $1,199 for the current generation.

If those prices prove accurate, the iPhone 17 Pro Max would suddenly become a much more attractive option.

For most users, the upgrades rumored for the iPhone 18 Pro Max may not be substantial enough to justify spending an extra $200-$300.

That is particularly true for people upgrading from a smartphone they have been using for more than two years.

In that case, the iPhone 17 Pro Max would still deliver a significant leap in performance, cameras, display quality and software features.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max could soon disappear from Apple Stores

Another factor buyers should consider is that Apple will likely stop selling the iPhone 17 Pro Max shortly after announcing the iPhone 18 Pro Max next month.

Consumers should still be able to find the iPhone 17 Pro Max through authorized dealers and third-party retailers after the new generation arrives. However, there is no guarantee that prices will fall sharply.

In fact, as official Apple supplies gradually dry up, retail prices for the iPhone 17 Pro Max may not fall significantly from their current levels.

So, if you need a new iPhone Pro and can find the iPhone 17 Pro Max at a reasonable price, buying now may be worth considering rather than waiting and potentially paying considerably more for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Another important consideration is longevity. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to retain 12GB of RAM, the same amount found in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

That means the iPhone 17 Pro Max should still have a strong enough hardware foundation to support new versions of iOS and many of Apple's artificial intelligence features for years to come.

What upgrades could the iPhone 18 Pro Max bring?

Unlike some previous iPhone generations, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is not expected to represent a dramatic leap over the iPhone 17 Pro Max. One of its most notable upgrades could be the A20 Pro processor.

The new chip is expected to improve performance and energy efficiency, but those gains may not translate into a big enough difference in everyday use for most iPhone 17 Pro Max owners.

The main camera system is also rumored to receive an upgrade with a variable aperture. The technology could give users greater control over how much light reaches the sensor while offering more flexibility in adjusting depth of field.

It would be a noteworthy improvement for people who take photos frequently, but may not be enough to convince everyone to upgrade.

Apple is also rumored to be preparing new color options, including light blue, silver and Dark Cherry. In terms of design, the Dynamic Island could become smaller on both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Pro Max model, meanwhile, is expected to be thicker and heavier than the current generation.

Connectivity could be another area of improvement. The iPhone 18 Pro Max may use Apple's own C2 modem while also supporting satellite-based 5G connectivity.

If confirmed, this would mark a notable step forward in connectivity, although its real-world value would depend on availability and the services Apple ultimately provides.

Of course, Apple may have other features in development that have yet to surface in current leaks.

Based on what has emerged so far, however, the iPhone 18 Pro Max does not appear likely to be a revolutionary upgrade over the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

One variable could change everything

There is one new development that could alter this calculation. A recent rumor suggests Apple could raise prices across the iPhone 17 lineup as early as next week.

If that happens, the iPhone 17 Pro Max would lose much of its price advantage, making an immediate purchase less appealing than it is now.

However, if iPhone 17 Pro Max prices remain unchanged over the coming days, there would still be a strong case for buying the current generation.

Ultimately, the most important rule is simple: only buy a new phone when you genuinely need one.

If your current iPhone is still working well and meets your needs, there is little reason to rush out and buy an iPhone 17 Pro Max simply because the iPhone 18 Pro Max is approaching.

On the other hand, if you are using a phone that is already several years old and are ready for an upgrade, the iPhone 17 Pro Max could be a sensible choice.

At current prices, and with the next generation expected to offer relatively modest upgrades, buyers could potentially save $200-$300 by choosing the iPhone 17 Pro Max rather than waiting for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
