If you're considering upgrading to the iPhone 17 series, your first question is likely: should I choose the iPhone 17 or the iPhone 17 Pro?

Both models are appealing. However, after several weeks of real-world usage, detailed comparisons, and diverse usage scenarios, it’s clear that the standard iPhone 17 is the more compelling option.

Major upgrades for the standard version

What stands out in the iPhone 17 is how many Pro-level upgrades Apple has brought to the base model.

For the first time, a standard iPhone shares so much in common with its Pro sibling. With a more accessible price point, the iPhone 17 balances performance and affordability in a way that’s hard to beat.

This doesn’t mean the iPhone 17 Pro lacks value. Its triple-camera system still offers superior photography for enthusiasts. But with a $300 higher price tag, the gap in features no longer justifies the cost for most users.

Same large display size

Unlike previous years, where the base model featured a smaller screen, the iPhone 17 now comes with a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display - identical to the iPhone 17 Pro.

Both models offer a resolution of 2,622 x 1,206 pixels, a pixel density of 460 ppi, and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

This means the viewing experience is nearly identical between the two devices. The iPhone 17 is also protected by the new Ceramic Shield 2 glass, just like the Pro.

Smooth 120Hz refresh rate

A standout new feature is the inclusion of a 120Hz ProMotion display.

Previously, a simple screen scroll could immediately reveal which phone was the Pro. Now, the iPhone 17 matches its sibling in screen fluidity.

From general navigation to gaming, users benefit from smoother graphics, faster response times, and a more immersive experience that matches the iPhone 17 Pro.

Main camera nearly identical

While the iPhone 17 Pro sports a triple 48MP camera setup, the iPhone 17 isn't far behind.

In side-by-side photo comparisons using the main and ultra-wide cameras, the image quality was remarkably similar between the two models.

The 48MP main sensor on the iPhone 17 handles complex scenes with impressive dynamic range and accurate color reproduction.

Even in low-light conditions, it performs exceptionally well. For most users, this camera is more than enough - and it truly carries the device.

Equal charging speed

Although the iPhone 17 Pro slightly edges out in battery life, both phones share identical charging capabilities: 35W fast charging and 25W wireless charging via the Qi 2.2 standard.

Tests using Apple’s new 45W charger showed the iPhone 17 could reach 39% battery in 15 minutes and 71% in 30 minutes - virtually identical to the Pro’s performance.

Identical selfie camera

Apple made no distinction in front-camera hardware between the two models.

Both the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro feature an 18MP Center Stage camera, delivering consistent selfie quality and video call performance.

Face recognition, frame tracking, and automatic zoom to fit all faces in the frame are all fully supported on both devices.

Full iOS 26 experience

One of Apple’s biggest advantages over Android rivals is its unified software ecosystem.

Whether you choose the iPhone 17 or the Pro, both run iOS 26 with all its new features - Call Screening, Live Translation, and the modern Liquid Glass interface included.

No Pro-exclusive software features exist, making the standard iPhone feel just as advanced.

$300 cheaper - same base storage

Perhaps the most decisive factor: price.

The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099, a full $300 more than the iPhone 17. Surprisingly, the base iPhone 17 still offers 256GB of storage - the same as the Pro.

This makes the value equation clear: you pay less and get nearly everything the Pro offers.

With strong hardware, standout features, and a competitive price, the iPhone 17 becomes Apple’s most well-rounded and worthwhile model this year.

In 2025, Apple’s strategy clearly shifted. The once-wide gap between standard and Pro models has narrowed dramatically.

The iPhone 17 now boasts a large display, 120Hz refresh rate, powerful 48MP camera, fast charging, premium selfie performance, and the full iOS 26 suite.

With the Pro’s few remaining advantages offset by a significantly higher price, the iPhone 17 is now the smart choice for most users - striking the perfect balance of performance, experience, and value.
