Nguyen Dinh Bac will miss Vietnam's first two group-stage matches at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup if selected by coach Kim Sang Sik.

During the third-place playoff between Vietnam and South Korea at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup on January 23, Dinh Bac received a straight red card in the 86th minute following a dangerous challenge on an opposing player.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) subsequently classified the incident as serious foul play, handing the Vietnamese striker a two-match suspension and a $1,000 fine.

However, the 2026 tournament was the last U23 Asian Cup for which the Nghe An-born player was age-eligible. As a result, he cannot serve the suspension at the next edition of the U23 competition.

Under AFC disciplinary regulations, the outstanding suspension must instead be carried over to senior national team competition.

There was initially speculation that Dinh Bac had served one match of his ban when Vietnam faced Malaysia in a 2027 Asian Cup qualifier on March 31, 2026.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), however, clarified that the Hanoi Police FC striker had been left out of coach Kim Sang Sik's plans for that match, rather than being excluded because of the suspension.

The recently concluded ASEAN Cup 2026 and FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 also did not count toward the ban, as neither competition falls under the AFC's competition system.

Consequently, Dinh Bac's two-match suspension remains outstanding and is set to take effect at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup if he is called up to Vietnam's squad.

The striker, born in 2004, would therefore miss Vietnam's opening group-stage match against the United Arab Emirates on January 10 and their second fixture against South Korea on January 15.

He would become eligible to return for Vietnam's final group match against Yemen on January 20, having completed the two-match ban.

His absence would be a significant setback for Vietnam, given his important role in the team's attacking lineup.

Without Dinh Bac, coach Kim Sang Sik will need to consider alternative attacking partners for Nguyen Xuan Son.

Potential options include Minh Hoang, while the coach could also recall experienced forwards Nguyen Tien Linh or Pham Tuan Hai to strengthen the squad's attacking options.
