People in Can Gio 1 Village are being nuisanced by a group the wild monkeys

The herd consists of five monkeys with two weighing around 10 kilos, while three others around 2-5 kilos have troubled Can Gio 1 Village in My Xuyen District.

Tran Thuol, a local resident, said that the animals started appearing in the locality two years ago. Initially, there were only three, but then two more joined. They seemed to be a family.

At first, they were quite gentle and did not harm anything, so, people fed them. But gradually, they have become fiercer. The animals snatch food from children. They sometimes attack people if they try to resist.

The monkeys also come to local households to damage furniture and bite chickens. Some people in the village have been attacked by them, including a sixth grader who suffered from a leg injury.

Cao Ngoc Trung from Soc Trang Province’s Forest Protection Board said that the agency has tried to trap the monkeys, but failed.

“We will co-operate with the environmental police and local authorities to seek measures to catch the monkeys to release them into a forest in Cu Lao Dung District,” Trung added.
