The 11th annual Phan Chau Trinh Cultural Awards on Saturday honored seven local and foreign scholars in the fields of music, culture, translation and Vietnam studies for their devotions to the cause of Vietnamese cultural and educational development.

The award-winning scholars receive Phan Chau Trinh Cultural Awards for respective categories at a ceremony in HCMC on March 24



This year’s research award was given to two researchers Phan Cam Thuong and Lu Phuong for their studies on Vietnamese folk culture and philosophy of Marxism and Leninism respectively.

In addition, translator Nguyen Tung won the translation award for rendering many foreign works on anthropology into Vietnamese.

Notably, French historian professor Daniel Hemery and Vietnamese-French professor Pierre Brocheux also received the Vietnamese studies awards thanks to their dedications and studies on Vietnamese history and culture.

Meanwhile, the culture and education award went to musician Duong Thu and a group of translators of the Nhat nghe tinh (Master One Trade) book for their contributions to promoting cultural and technical knowledge.

At an award ceremony in HCMC on Saturday night, writer/translator Pham Toan from the capital city of Hanoi was selected as a cultural scholar in modern times by Phan Chau Trinh Cultural Foundation for his lifetime achievements on educational reforms in Vietnam.  

Founded in 2008, the cultural award named after Phan Chau Trinh, one of the country’s outstanding cultural scholars in the early 20th century, has a mission of recognizing exemplary cultural research works by domestic and foreign scholars that contribute to the advancement of Vietnamese culture and education in the context of global integration.
