VietNamNet Bridge - Despite the bad weather, the flower garden of Truong Van Nhung in Cu Chi district in HCMC this year still can bring high yield. Nhung said this is because he used tissue culture seedlings.

Tissue culture is one of the high technologies applied in the production of flowers and ornamental plants by the HCMC Biotechnology Center which has helped bring high economic efficiency to farmers.

Plant tissue culture is used to grow plant cells, tissues or organs.

Put into operation in 2014, the plant cell tissue culture area of the HCMC Biotechnology Center is considered the most modern seedling production complex in Vietnam.

The plant tissue culture house, covering an area of 677 square meters, has equipment that serves in vitro propagation, capable of 2 million seedlings each year.

Tissue culture is one of the high technologies applied in the production of flowers and ornamental plants by the HCMC Biotechnology Center which has helped bring high economic efficiency to farmers.

The glass house, comprising 10 rooms, is large enough for 10 experiments at the same time at different temperatures, and grows 10 varieties with different nutritional regimes.

The poly-greenhouse comprises three areas, each of which follows a specific planting model with watering system and nutritional regimes which can be adjusted to fit the three different plant varieties.

The net house is also equipped with automatic watering and nutritional systems.

According to Dr Duong Hoa Xo, director of the Biotechnology Center, the center is used to apply biotechnological findings at laboratories. The center also carries out research and experiments in the glass house, net house and fields; and store plant genes, sort and create new varieties by cross breeding.

Truong Van Nhung, the owner of a flower garden in Cu Chi district, HCMC, said though the weather conditions this year are unfavorable for floriculture, he still can get high yield thanks to seedlings produced with tissue culture technology.

Nhung said farmers can grow flowers with the seedlings and do not have to use many chemicals.

According to Xo, the great advantage of tissue culture technology is the rapid multiplication capacity which helps increase productivity and minimize epidemics, thus reducing production cost by 50 percent.

With the technology, the center has produced Phalaenopsis orchid with remarkable advantages compared to the traditional culture. The new method increases the bud creation rate, helps buds grow more strongly and increases the survival rate of saplings.

The success has prompted the center to work on breeding other varieties of orchids and propagating virus-free orchids based on tissue culture technology and the virus detection method.
