Vietnam's Olympic qualification hopes took a blow after a 9-0 loss to Australia in a qualification tournament in Japan yesterday.

It was their second defeat at the Asian Football Federation Women's Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 qualifiers in Osaka, following a 2-0 loss to China on Monday.

Australia took another step towards securing a place in Brazil later this year after recording a second consecutive win.

The Matildas proved their strength from early on, giving the Vietnamese no space to work in.

Goalkeeper Dang Thi Kieu Trinh, who played well against China, lost her clean sheet in the 10th minute.

Emily Gielnik put Australia ahead, before Kyah Simon's hattrick and Alana Kennedy sent Australia into the break with a 5-0 lead.

Emily van Egmond scored either side of goals from substitutes Ashleigh Sykes and Michelle Heyman before Claire Polkinghorne added another late on to round out the comprehensive victory after Australia had kicked-off their campaign with a 3-1 win over hosts Japan on Monday.

"Australia were more confident and stronger than us. We did our best, but they were simply stronger in the air than us," said Vietnamese coach Mai Duc Chung at the post-match conference.

"Australia fought and pressed and our players did not feel confident. We can compare North Korea to Australia so we will have to try to try to change our approach and use lower balls to try to avoid some of the mistakes we made against Australia," he said.

Australia coach Alen Stajcic said it was a good result and a pleasing performance from his team, although there was still room for improvement.

In the next match tomorrow Viet Nam will play North Korea while Australia face South Korea, while hosts Japan square off with China.
