VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam is planning to increase the generation of electricity from waste to help ease pollution and reserve land for purposes other than dumping grounds. 

One of the technologies it is choosing is WTE, developed by Vietnamese experts.

WTE treats solid waste with gasification, which under a lack of oxygen generates synthesis gas (syngas), used as fuel to run electricity generation units. 

The biggest advantages of the method are that it runs in a closed processing line and  does not require waste classification at source or large land plots. No bad odors or water are produced during the process of converting waste into syngas. The process runs safely.

According to Nguyen Gia Long, director of the Hydraulic Machine Company, the inventor and tester of the technology over many years, the technology was developed based on source technologies such as Seraphin, CDW, MBT CD-08 and MBT-GRE. 

Under WTE, input waste is cut into small pieces before it is forwarded into the conveyor belt. Here, MBT-GRE technology rapidly splits decomposed soft-tissue organic matter and water contained in waste mixture (these are decomposable matters which produce bad odors and attract insects)

Soft tissue organic matter and water will then be automatically transferred down to the biogas pipeline to produce methane gas, while the remaining residue will be dried to reduce humidity. After that, it will be pressed into plates and put into multi-fuel gasification furnaces to produce syngas.

WTE is being tested at a factory of the Hydraulic Machine Company in Dong Van IZ in Ha Nam province. After one month of operation, the factory has treated all 208 tons of unclassified waste provided by the Ha Nam Urban Environment Company. The electricity generated from the waste has been used to light the Dong Van IZ.

After one month trial operation, the factory has cleaned 208 tons of waste not classified by Ha Nam Urban Environment Company. Electricity produced from garbage lit the entire lighting system of Dong Van Industrial Park. The Environmental Monitoring Center has come to a conclusion that the quality of emissions from the treatment process can meet Vietnamese standards.

Besides Ha Nam, WTE has also been tested at the Go Cat waste-to-electricity plant in Tan Binh district in HCMC. Since April 2017, when it became operational, Go Cat has treated 500 tons of industrial waste and generated 7 MW to provide to the national grid.

Scientists have praised the technology, saying it is suited to Vietnam.
