Xiaomi’s next premium smartphone lineup is expected to arrive under the Xiaomi 18 Series banner, with the Xiaomi 18 Pro emerging as one of the most closely watched models thanks to a range of significant upgrades.

Yet the feature generating the most discussion is neither the camera system nor the processor. Instead, it is the rear-mounted secondary display - a bold concept that many observers believe Apple is unlikely to bring to the iPhone.

According to recent leaks, Xiaomi is not only retaining the rear display on its next-generation flagship but also significantly improving its size, display quality and privacy capabilities.

Rear display set for major expansion

Last year, Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max with one of the most distinctive design elements in the flagship market: a secondary display integrated directly into the rear camera module.

The screen was more than a decorative addition. It functioned as a viewfinder for selfies captured with the rear camera system, allowing users to take advantage of higher-quality sensors and lenses than those typically found on front-facing cameras.

The display could also show notifications, clocks, custom wallpapers and even interactive animated characters. At 2.7 inches on the previous generation, it was large enough to be practical while maintaining overall design balance.

According to reliable tipster Smart Pikachu, the Xiaomi 18 Pro will feature a rear display measuring as much as four inches diagonally. If accurate, this would represent a substantial leap from the previous generation.

The upgraded display is also expected to deliver higher brightness and improved resolution, making notifications, quick controls and selfie framing significantly more convenient.

A larger display could further enable Xiaomi to introduce new interaction methods, transforming the back of the smartphone into a functional secondary workspace rather than a simple supplementary screen.

New privacy technology may be included

Beyond the display upgrade, Smart Pikachu claims Xiaomi 18 Pro will introduce a new privacy-focused feature.

Details remain unclear, and it is not yet known whether the technology will apply to the main display or the secondary rear screen. Regardless of implementation, the addition would address growing consumer concerns surrounding digital privacy.

Industry observers believe Xiaomi could pursue one of two approaches.

The first would involve a hardware-based solution similar to technologies being explored by Samsung, designed to restrict viewing angles and prevent nearby individuals from seeing on-screen content.

The second possibility is a software-based implementation through HyperOS. This scenario appears more likely, particularly following reports that Xiaomi is developing its own version of privacy-screen technology similar to a feature rumored for the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

A software-driven approach would also allow Xiaomi to expand the capability to additional devices through future HyperOS updates rather than limiting it exclusively to the Xiaomi 18 Pro.

Other notable Xiaomi 18 Series specifications

Current reports suggest Xiaomi could officially unveil the Xiaomi 18 lineup as early as September.

The initial range is expected to include three models: the standard Xiaomi 18, Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max.

According to well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max may feature a 200MP primary camera with a large 1/1.2-inch sensor.

The camera is expected to incorporate LOFIC technology, designed to improve image quality in challenging lighting environments such as backlit scenes and high-contrast situations.

The device is also rumored to feature a 200MP telephoto camera using a 1/1.56-inch sensor, 3x optical zoom and an f/2.4 aperture. Such a configuration would underline Xiaomi’s continued focus on mobile photography.

Performance is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset.

Battery capacity could be another major headline. Rumors suggest the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max may include an 8,500mAh battery - far exceeding the capacity of most premium smartphones currently available.

The device is also expected to support 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, promising exceptional endurance and charging speeds.

Why Apple is unlikely to build an iPhone like this

Apple remains one of the most successful technology companies in the world, but when it comes to experimental hardware concepts, Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi have often shown a greater willingness to take risks.

Apple is reportedly developing its first foldable iPhone, but foldable smartphones are no longer a novel concept after years of commercialization by Android manufacturers.

A rear-mounted display, however, represents a different and less explored direction.

Many consumers may initially view such a feature as unnecessary until they experience its practical benefits firsthand.

The ability to use the main rear camera system for high-quality selfies is a clear example. With a display as large as four inches, framing and composition become considerably easier, allowing users to fully exploit the capabilities of flagship camera hardware.

The commercial success of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is viewed by many analysts as evidence that consumers are genuinely interested in the concept.

That success may encourage Xiaomi to continue investing heavily in rear-display technology and ultimately establish it as a defining characteristic of the company’s future flagship devices.
