Thang has had the honor of three times being selected as a member of the teams in charge of ensuring internet connections for US political delegations visiting Vietnam, including those led by US Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, US Vice President Kamala Harris, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Thang, born in 1994, said though he has experience in serving VIP clients, he always feels anxious and "holds his breath until the last minute" every time when implementing the missions.
The White House and US Embassy in Vietnam always set high requirements on the quality of the specific internet transmission lines, so the engineers serving the US delegations have to maintain high concentration in their work.
All information is highly confidential and requires a high security level. News is updated at the last minute, so engineers need to respond very quickly and deploy work immediately. There must always be contingency plans.
“I had the honor of serving the US Presidential delegation’s visit to Vietnam for the first time in 2017 at the APEC Summit week in Da Nang,” he recalled. “Our company was chosen to provide internet transmission lines for the points where events took place, and I was a member of the team that implemented the mission."
Thang, a graduate of the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT), one of the most prestigious IT training establishments, is the holder of many international technical certificates. He takes pride in being selected for the teams that serve such important international events. Only the best can be selected after they prove they meet very strict requirements.
Thang said "urgent" is the word used to describe the work of serving diplomatic missions.
“The first time I experienced the minutes of working in an extreme hurry was in 2019, at the US-North Korea Summit,” he recalled.
“At that time, the international press center for hundreds of news agencies in the world was unexpectedly relocated from Melia Hotel to the Hanoi Vietnam-Russia Friendship Palace, though everything was already installed at the palace.
"AT&T, the telecommunication carrier designated by the White House to work with NetNam at the conference, asked us to relocate the center and complete the work after two hours. This was a struggle and there must not be mistakes."
However, Thang’s most "stormy" time occurred in mid-2021, when in two consecutive months the country received US high-ranking delegations to Vietnam, led by the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Vice President Kamala Harris.
At that time, the Covid-19 pandemic developments were complicated and the team of the internet connection deployment faced difficulties when traveling, preparing machines and equipment, and ensuring good health conditions to serve the important event.
Thang and his co-workers at NetNam will never forget the round-the-clock duties, and travel certificates, protective clothing, and Covid-19 quick testing.
Talking with VietNamNet about the event, Thang mentioned the beads of sweat on his body under the protective clothing, lunches at 4pm, and the constant anxiety. However, he said he was lucky to have the opportunities in his career.
The US side sets very strict principles and high requirements in work, but after the tasks are implemented, the officers in the US delegations are friendly. They always give compliments and encouragement to the Vietnamese team after successful events.
“The US side always reserves a separate area for Vietnamese workers to take pictures and prepare materials. I had the chance to make acquaintance and exchange with some engineers from AT&T,” Thang said, adding that they keep contact via social media.
“CNN reporters also praise the work of Vietnam preparing and organizing the events,” he said.
Not only US Presidents, Thang and his co-workers have had chances to provide services to high-ranking politicians from other countries as well. NetNam, where he works, provides services to high-end hotels in Vietnam and embassies, so it is often chosen for international events.
The visit to Vietnam by South Korean Yoon Suk Yeol in June 2023 and Blackpink’s concert in Hanoi in August were important events challenging young Vietnamese engineers.
