Young men in Thuy Linh village, Hoang Mai district, Ha Noi competed in the locality’s traditional ‘lucky ball’ scrambling festival on February 2 (the sixth day of the first lunar month).
The festival is held to commemorate Linh Lang Highest Royal, who is the fourth son of King Ly Thanh Tong. The centuries-old sporting event demonstrates the strength, intelligence and resilience of the players. Players are divided into three age groups namely children, teenagers and adults. The biggest ball for adults is weighted up 25kg. Eight players, wearing coloured belts, are divided into four teams to scramble for the ball. The teams compete to bring the ball which is made of jack-fruit wood to their respective flag-hole. The ball in the hole of the red team. The audiences are indispensable in inspiring the players. |
