According to the Ministry of Health, the results of the national survey on reproductive and sexual health of Vietnamese adolescents and young adults aged 10-24 in 2016 showed that adolescents and young adults enjoy a higher quality of life, and their access to information is increasingly diverse.
More than 90% of people aged 10-24 said that they have exchanged and accessed information through modern channels such as the internet, television and text messages on mobile phones, but only one third of them use the internet to find information about sexual and reproductive health.
According to a 2017 survey, the average age of first sexual intercourse of respondents (ages 14-24) was 18.7 years old, earlier than the results of previous surveys (19.6 years old, 2010).
Of the total number of adolescents participating in the survey, 15% reported having sex before marriage.
Vietnamese adolescents and young adults have inadequate knowledge and incorrect practices on sexual health issues. A study of young female migrant workers showed that in the six months up to the time of the survey 27.8% did not use contraception.
Notably, knowledge about pregnancy among adolescents and young adults aged 10-24 is incomplete with 17% correctly answering questions about the days when women are fertile.
Among the number of women aged 15-24 who participated in the surveys, 18 out of 1,000 have had an abortion.
