The director of the HCM City Tourism Department, Bui Ta Hoang Vu, said at the forum that local authorities provided information about the demand for investment in infrastructure, culture and sports. Investors met leaders of provinces to learn about demand and capital absorption capability.

“HCM City has initiated links with Mekong Delta’s provinces as it realizes the real demand. It wants to improve links with destinations in Mekong Delta,” Vu said.

HCMC has the highest number of projects open to investors (51),while An Giang has 24 and Bac Lieu 20.

HCMC is calling for investment in cultural tourism, culinary tourism, waterway tourism, agricultural ecotourism and MICE, while attracting investments for cultural, sports, tourism and entertainment infrastructure items.

The provinces in the eastern part of Mekong Delta, including Dong Thap, Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh, hope that investors develop tourism projects based on the existing potential in localities.

Nguyen Ngoc Thuong, director of the Dong Thap Culture, Sports and Tourism, promised that local authorities will create favorable conditions for investors.

The seven provinces in the western part of Mekong Delta, including Can Tho, An Giang, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, also committed to welcome investors.

Cao Xuan Thu Van, director of the Bac Lieu Culture, Sport and Tourism, affirmed that if receiving appropriate investment, the tourism in the western part will ‘take off and fly high’.

At present, the provinces cannot fully exploit the potential as they lack destinations which have high originality and meet international standards.

Dong Thap province wants to develop ecotourism associated with high technology and organic agriculture, which helps protect the environment and preserves the original culture of the locality.

In the immediate time, some farms, ecological areas and hi-tech agriculture areas which can satisfy certain requirements will be selected to be developed into experience-tourism points. Sites applying organic hi-tech agriculture will be open to tourists.

Analysts say that Mekong Delta’s tourism cannot develop because of the lack of a zoning and linking strategy which connects HCMC and other localities. The lack of investment in transport and tourism infrastructure is also considered a hindrance.
