"For me, a woman standing barely 1.2 meters tall, having a husband, a child, and a complete home is truly a miracle," said Le Thi Huyen Tran (born in 1989, residing in O Mon Ward, Can Tho City) after more than a year of marriage.
Tran was diagnosed with rickets as a child, leaving her height capped at 1.2 meters. Frail and physically weak, she moved more slowly than her peers in daily activities.
Her short stature left Tran feeling deeply self-conscious. Innocent teasing from friends and curious glances from strangers caused her to withdraw into herself.
Upon graduating from high school, Tran stopped her schooling to yield educational opportunities to her younger sister. Later, Tran moved to HCMC, rented a room, and earned a living selling street coffee.
"Life making a living in a strange city gets lonely at times. In 2023, I joined a dating group to make friends, never expecting to meet the destiny of my life," Tran recalled.
That man was Huynh Dinh Cam (born in 1993, originally from Quang Ngai Province), who was working for a garment company in HCMC at the time.
Right from their initial messaging exchanges, Tran sent him a portrait and shared her situation. She wanted no secrets because she genuinely sought friendship.
Viewing Tran's photo, Cam replied: "No problem at all." They chatted daily, sharing stories about work and life. About a month later, they held their first meeting at a coffee shop. Everything unfolded gently, sparking Tran's first romantic feelings.
As time went on, they spent more weekends together. Cam often picked her up for meals or outings. His affection was expressed through small but thoughtful gestures - placing a helmet on her head or leaning his motorbike to make it easier for her to climb on.
Although they both knew how they felt, it was not until September 2023 that Cam confessed his love.
"He asked me, 'Do you have feelings for me? Because I have feelings for you. Will you be my girlfriend?' I happily said yes," Tran recalled.
Even after they became a couple, Tran sometimes worried about their physical differences. Cam's unwavering support eventually erased her insecurities.
"He never felt embarrassed to be with me. He held my hand in public, introduced me to his friends, and took me everywhere.
"He told me, 'You're such a genuine person. I don't need a beautiful woman. I just need someone who makes me happy whenever we're together,'" Tran said.
A happy marriage
Cam's father was initially silent after learning that his son was dating a very petite woman. His mother, however, was more accepting, saying she would support whatever made her son happy.
His father's silence became a source of anxiety for Tran, making her nervous whenever Cam mentioned introducing her to his family.
One day, Cam told her, "I have to bring you home so my parents can meet you and know who you really are. Avoiding it forever isn't the answer."
His determination gave Tran the confidence she needed. Together, they traveled nearly 1,000km to visit his family in Quang Ngai.
To her surprise, the welcome she received was nothing like what she had feared.
"His parents treated me warmly and never objected. His father told him, 'Your happiness is your decision. We can't live your life for you.' I truly felt their love and acceptance," Tran said.
With the blessing of both families, the couple married in early 2025. Because of the long distance and Tran's mother's poor health, they held separate wedding celebrations in each hometown. Tran's family hosted about 450 guests, while Cam's family invited around 300.
After getting married, Tran worried most about having children, although both of them had prepared themselves for a difficult journey.
To their surprise, she conceived naturally, and her pregnancy was relatively smooth.
"The moment the doctor delivered my baby and happily told me, 'Tran, your baby is long and healthy. Don't worry,' I burst into tears of joy."
Cam and both families were equally overwhelmed by the precious gift.
Since then, Cam has devoted himself to caring for both his wife and son. Because of Tran's petite frame, lifting and carrying the baby can be difficult, so he is always there to help. Despite working long hours during the day, he still wakes up at night to care for their child alongside his wife.
