The ministry reported that Vietnam, Thailand, India and Cambodia are leading in the export of semiconductor chips to the US market this year. Vietnam accounts for more than 10 percent of the total amount of chips the US imported in the last seven months.

In terms of export turnover, Vietnam ranked third in Asia, following Malaysia and Taiwan (China).

However, except for a few enterprises that can design chips, such as Viettel and FPT, Vietnam’s chip exports are mostly from foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) which undertake simple work, such as assembling and testing.

Semiconductor chips are considered the foundation of modern calculations. The semiconductor chip has played an increasingly important role in the operations of all electronic systems, information technology, telecommunications and automation.

According to the US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), the global semiconductor chip market has a value of $600 billion and the figure is predicted to soar to $1 trillion by 2030.

In such conditions, Vietnam is seeking ways to join more deeply into the global semiconductor supply chain.

Daniel Lin from MediaTek told VietNamNet that Vietnam has an opportunity to become an important link in the global semiconductor chip supply chain if it can perform well in manufacturing and create innovative designs.

He said that Vietnam should think of investing in the production sector in the semiconductor chip industry. It could start from simple things such as IC design, factory and testing lab building, packaging, and software service development, before gradually raising technology mastery levels.

Vietnam has 20 companies in the field of IC Design with about 5,000 design engineers. It should intensify training to solve the labor shortage in the chip manufacturing sector around the globe.

FPT has designed and manufactured three power IC lines and has had the first supply contracts. This is the first step on the path to turn the ‘semiconductor dream’ of many Vietnamese generations into reality.

FPT Semiconductor, a subsidiary of FPT Group, was established in March 2022, is implementing the orders on producing 25 million chips in 2024-2025.

“FPT is implementing orders for 2 million chips for Japanese partners. It is expected that FPT would have 7 new chip lines. In early 2024, FPT Semiconductor will design and manufacture IoT platform chips for smart device apps, IoT for agriculture, forestry and aquaculture,” said Nguyen Vinh Quang, CEO of the company.
