Nguyen Minh Nhat Van, a student at Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted, has made a strong impression after securing admission with a full scholarship worth approximately US$450,000 from University of Chicago - one of the leading universities in the US.

Speaking to VietNamNet, Nhat Van shared that he felt both joyful and relieved upon receiving the admission offer along with the maximum financial aid package. “I’m happy that all the effort I’ve put in over a long period has finally paid off, and relieved that the challenging application journey has come to a complete and fulfilling end,” he said.

The scholarship package covers tuition, living expenses, insurance, airfare and study materials throughout four years.

A profile shaped by research and purpose

A defining strength in Nhat Van’s application was his active involvement in projects and scientific research, particularly in the field of biomedical science.

In his personal essay, he expressed a desire to study in the interdisciplinary environment at the University of Chicago, especially within the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.

He emphasized the intersection between technology and ethics. “I believe that a scientific innovation only truly matters when it is guided by responsibility toward people. My goal in studying the structure of life is not just to understand how it works, but to find solutions that genuinely improve lives and bring well-being to communities,” he shared.

In a second essay, Nhat Van reflected on his personal growth and the balance between two contrasting aspects of his thinking through the word “bolt.”

“On one hand, ‘bolt’ represents discipline and precision - the high standards I set for myself in scientific research. On the other, it symbolizes breakthrough and momentum - the willingness to step beyond existing frameworks to explore new perspectives,” he explained.

Beyond academics, Nhat Van is proficient in four programming languages: Java, C++, Python and HTML.

A journey of personal transformation

Nguyen Thi Vy Huong, his mother, said she was both surprised and proud of her son’s achievement. More importantly, she cherished witnessing his personal transformation.

“We were not only surprised and proud of his achievement, but also of how he has pushed himself beyond his limits. He used to be a very shy child,” she said emotionally.

As a child, Nhat Van was reserved and rarely engaged in social interactions.

He credits his success to the educational environment at his high school and the guidance of his homeroom teacher Vu Thi Huong, along with principal Vu Van Tien, who also taught him chemistry.

He also drew inspiration from his older sister, who six years earlier was admitted to Minerva University in the US - one of the most selective institutions globally - with a major scholarship. She is now a software engineer at a leading US cloud computing company.

“Seeing my sister as a role model motivated me to keep learning and improving myself,” Nhat Van said.

According to his plans, Nhat Van will depart for the US this August. At the University of Chicago, he is considering pursuing either Economics or Molecular Engineering.
